New England Patriots at New York Jets Betting Preview

In this Sunday AFC game, New England is projected as the heavy favorite and is currently giving up 9.5 points. The Patriots are also receiving -440 moneyline odds while the Jets are +310. Oddsmakers have set the over/under (O/U) at 46.5 points. Should New England falls down early, it would probably result in a worthy in-game betting opportunity.

This matchup’s betting odds have moved slightly from when they were initially posted. The line opened at 9 and the game’s O/U was set originally at 47.

The Patriots have gained 0.3 units so far in 2018 and are 6-4 against the spread (ATS). They’ve been a decent under bet and have posted an O/U mark of 4-6. The disappointing Jets have lost 5.0 units this season. The team is 3-7 ATS and the over’s hit in six of its games.

The Patriots are 7-3 straight up (SU), including 2-0 SU against AFC East opponents. The Jets are 3-7 SU overall and 0-3 SU against divisional foes.

The Pats are looking to get back in stride after a 34-10 loss to Tennessee on November 11 where Tom Brady completed only 21-of-41 passes for 254 yards. Sony Michel (just 31 yards on 11 rush attempts) led the running attack while Julian Edelman (nine receptions, 104 yards) and James White (five catches, 31 yards) handled the receiving duties in the defeat.

New York might already be looking ahead to 2019 after a 31-point loss to Buffalo a couple of weeks ago. Josh McCown completed 17-of-34 passes for 135 yards and two interceptions. Isaiah Crowell (19 yards on seven rush attempts, one TD) handled the running game while Quincy Enunwa (four receptions, 18 yards) and Chris Herndon (three catches, 34 yards) led the receiving attack in the loss.

New England has run the ball on 42.5 percent of its offensive possessions this year while New York has an overall rush percentage of 44.6 percent. The Patriots have run for 109 yards/game (including 126 per game versus East opponents) and have 12 touchdowns on the ground this year. The Jets are averaging 107 rush yards per game (68 in conference) and have seven total rushing TDs.

The Pats offense has averaged 280 yards through the air overall (299 per game against conference opposition) and has 17 passing TDs so far. The Jets have produced 207 pass yards per outing (232.7 against AFC competition) and have 11 total pass scores.

New England has allowed opponents to rush for an average of 111 yards and pass for 282 yards per game. The New York defense has allowed 260.1 yards per game to opposing passers and 119.5 yards per game on the ground. Both teams allow similar adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) to opponents, as the Pats have given up an ANY/A of 6.43 to opposing QBs, while the Jets are allowing an ANY/A of 6.00.

Offensively, Brady is up to 2,454 passing yards this year. He’s connected on 65 percent of his 336 attempts with 16 scores through the air and seven interceptions. Brady has a 6.77 adjusted net yards per pass attempt, including 6.47 over the last two games.

Sam Darnold has managed to complete 159-of-289 passes for 1,934 yards, 11 TDs and 14 INTs for New York. His ANY/A stands at a less-than-ideal 4.50 for the year and 0.51 over his last two games.
