Werdum vs Volkov Odds – Next up for the UFC is a trip to London for UFN 127 and the card is topped by Fabricio Werdum versus Alexander Volkov. The card goes down on March 17th but the books already have odds up for the main fights.
Werdum (23-7-1) is a former heavyweight champion who just has to keep on winning. He wants another title shot but at 40 years old, father time is not on his side. Werdum won the belt as an underdog against the formidable Cain Velasquez but he ran into Stipe Miocic in his first title defense and lost the belt. He has been working for a rematch ever since and he has gone 3-1.
The 29 year old Volkov has been around the block at 29-6. He is best remembered for a long run with Bellator from 2012 to 2015. This latest iteration of Volkov has seen the dangerous striker go 3-0 with the UFC, but Werdum is a leap up in competition level.
Volkov likes to keep the fight standing and with his tall 6’7 frame, he presents match-up problems for a lot of fighters. Werdum has shown a propensity to mix it up standing when given the chance and he has put in the work with his clinches and knees, but his strength is always going to be the ground game.
There is a chance that Werdum could finish the fight early if he gets Volkov to the ground. Velasquez is not the only “unstoppable” fighter Werdum has finished as he was the first man to submit the great Fedor Emilianenko. If given the chance Werdum does not fool around, he will take it and finish the fight.
But there are things Volkov can do with his length to keep the fight standing. If Volkov can manage to stay off the floor in the early going and extend the fight, his striking could begin to wear Werdum out.
British slugger Jimi Manuwa (17-3) is in the co-feature spot at home as he faces tough Polish fighter Jan Blachowicz (21-7). The two have met before and that fight back in April of 2015 saw Manuwa win a UD.
Since then, Manuwa has gone an inconsistent 2-2. What is worse, he has been KO’d in both of his losses so the book is out on how to beat him. The UFC would badly like to get Manuwa on track. The hard hitting Brit is nicknamed “Poster Boy” and the UFC would love to see him live up to that nickname.
Blachowiz has also gone 2-2 in his last four fights but he has a bit more momentum as he is on a two fight winning streak. Blachowicz has extended Alexander Gustafsson, Patrick Cummins and Manuwa the distance in losses so he is not someone who gets taken out in fights. Manuwa is. That factor will make Blachowicz dangerous throughout the entire three rounds as he looks for Manuwa’s chin. It will be interesting to see if Manuwa is more gun shy and it should be noted he is also coming off a ten month layoff. Blachowicz has gone 2-0 since October of 2017, so he has been active and successful as of late.
