West Virginia Downs Buffalo On Late Three-Pointer To Advance

Tarik Phillip's rare three helped the Mountaineers move past Buffalo on Friday.

West Virginia 68 Buffalo 62

No. 12 seed Buffalo were able to come back from a 10-point halftime deficit, but fell short in the end during their quest to become the third team to upset a high-seeded Big 12 team in the first round, thanks to a clutch three-pointer from an unlikely source.

The Bulls had pulled to 64-62 with just under a minute left before West Virginia’s Tarik Phillips nailed a three as the shot clock expired.

Phillip’s three was just his sixth of the season, and he came into the game shooting only 20 percent from beyond the arc on the season.

The Mountaineers’ Devin Williams led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting with nine rebounds, an assist and a steal. West Virginia shot 44.9 percent overall, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three-point range.

Buffalo shot 45.5 percent overall while shooting 6-of-16 from three-point range. Xavier Ford led Buffalo with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

The Mountaineers move on to face fourth-seeded Maryland on Sunday in the Cleveland regional.
