Who Will be the Dallas Cowboys Head Coach in 2019?

Scott Taetsch-USA TODAY Sports

It’s no secret that Jason Garrett is coaching for his job this year with the Dallas Cowboys and as each loss piles up, especially in a weak NFC East, the ax gets closer to his neck. While I don’t think team owner Jerry Jones will plug Garrett into the guillotine during the regular season, he’ll certainly get chopping once the season is over and Dallas misses the playoffs.

If you needed any more evidence to why Garrett needs to go, look no further than the final minute of football played against the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Dallas had the ball deep in Washington territory with a time out in its pocket. They could have taken at least two shots at the end zone before attempting to kick a field goal. Even 10 yards closer on the three-point attempt would have made the difference. Garrett didn’t see it that way and the Cowboys were stuck with the 20-17 loss.

Garrett took over the Cowboys as the interim head coach in 2010 and compiled a 70-59 record and won Coach of the Year in 2016. In spite of that, he’s just 1-2 in the playoffs and two playoff appearances in nearly a decade just isn’t good enough. Not with the roster and money at Garrett’s disposal. It’s time for a divorce.

It’s an intriguing list, and Jerry Jones is almost certainly looking over all the possibilities. While Josh McDaniels might be the odds-on favorite here, I don’t see that happening at all. He’s obviously got some sort of handshake deal in New England to take over for Bill Belichick when he retires. Frankly, I feel like that might happen at the end of this season.

Sean Payton will stay in New Orleans as long as Drew Brees is there, which means at least one more year. The name I like? John DeFilippo and Jones better like him too. DeFilippo will likely be the hottest head coaching prospect to come out of the NFL coordinator pool this year.

DeFilippo is currently the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator and he has the team on a tear. They’re averaging 25.3 points per game and 380.4 yards of offense. He knows how to get the most out of his weapons and has wide receiver Adam Thielen on a record pace through the first seven games of the season. Thielen has 67 catches for 822 yards and five touchdowns and the season isn’t half over yet.

The college coaches all look like long shots to me. Many times when a big time college coach jumps to the pros or another program it means his present school is about to be hit with a load of NCAA sanctions.

Jones will be looking for an offensive coach, a guy like Sean McVay, Doug Pederson or Matt Nagy that can get the most out of that side of the ball. It makes DeFilippo the obvious choice to me. If Matt LaFleur can get anything going with the Tennessee Titans, he could be in contention. And, if you want a real dark horse possibility, don’t sleep on Lane Kiffin. If Jones does go with a college coach, it could very well be him. Plus, they did just trade for Amari Cooper.
