It was just a few weeks ago that many people were predicting that the New York Giants would not bring back head coach Tom Coughlin in 2015. After a couple of wins, it is sounding more like Coughlin will return for another season with Big Blue.
The New York Giants have not quit on Coughlin as players are still playing hard to end the season.
Injuries and ODB
Two of the biggest reasons that Coughlin could be returning next season are injuries and Odell Beckham Jr. The 2014 New York Giants have been hit hard by injuries this season with key players like Victor Cruz, Geoff Schwartz, Jon Beason, Walter Thurmond III, Prince Amukamara and Rashad Jennings missing either all of part of this season.
The Giants have actually looked good on offense in recent weeks thanks to the play of Beckham Jr. With the rookie wideout and Victor Cruz both in the lineup next season, there is no doubt the offense could be really good.
“There is a lot to look forward to going into next year,” Beckham said, “being realistic.”
Beckham has been the best receiver in the NFL over the past month and he now leads the Giants in touchdowns with nine and he is on pace to have over 1,000 receiving yards this season. Eli Manning finally looks comfortable in Ben McAdoo’s offense and there is some renewed optimism in New York for 2015.
Coughlin Wants to Return
The Giants have missed the playoffs the past three years but Coughlin thinks he can still coach. He is 68 years old but still has the support of ownership and players. If he returns in 2015, it would be his 12th season with the Giants. Coughlin has said that he believes he can coach into his 70s.
A winner of two Super Bowl titles with the Giants, Coughlin’s rings have bought him time in the pressure-packed city of New York. Quarterback Eli Manning still fully supports his head coach and Coughlin has been very well prepared throughout this difficult season.
It is looking more and more likely that Coughlin will get one last shot with the Giants in 2015. If he doesn’t get the team into the playoffs then he will be gone but if he does the unthinkable and becomes the first coach in franchise history to win three Super Bowls then he might be coaching well into his 70’s.
