Is 2015 the season where Tiger Woods finally wins another major? In case you have lost count, Woods has not won a major since 2008. Oddsmakers give Tiger a decent chance, as they have put the odds on Tiger winning a major in 2015 at 2-1.
Poor 2014 Season for Tiger
It was ugly for Tiger Woods for most of the 2014 season. He had just one Top 25 finish in seven starts and he actually withdrew from two tournaments due to injury. He had surgery in March and didn’t play again until June. He actually only started in seven tournaments and didn’t sniff contention in any of the majors. He didn’t even play the Masters or the U.S. Open.
He was 69th at The Open Championship and he missed the cut at the PGA Championship. Tiger is 39 years old so the question is being asked as to how many years Tiger has left. Jack Nicklaus won his last major at the age of 46 so Tiger realistically doesn’t have more than five or six years of seriously challenging for majors.
2015 Major Courses
The Masters takes place at Augusta which used to be a great course for Tiger but that is not the case any longer. Augusta is longer and Tiger simply doesn’t drive it as far as he used to. Augusta is a course that favors right handed player who draw the ball and that is not Tiger.
The 2015 U.S. Open takes place at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington. The course looks like it should be one that favors a golfer who can both draw and fade the ball and that is not a strength of Tiger’s.
The 2015 British Open takes place at the Old Course at St. Andrews. It is a favorite course of Tiger’s and it would seem to be his best chance to win. Tiger won’t have to hit it straight or with his driver because long irons work well at St. Andrews.
The 2015 PGA Championship takes place at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. The last time the course hosted the PGA was in 2010 and Tiger finished tied for 28th. This course doesn’t demand length and Tiger could have a realistic chance to contend.
Odds are Against Tiger Winning a Major
When you look at the odds and the courses it is hard to see any value in taking Tiger at odds of 2-1 to win a major. It seems unlikely he will win the Masters or the U.S. Open. His best chance would be the British Open so if you think Tiger is going to win a major you would be better off just betting him to win that tournament as he will likely go off at double-digit odds.
