Winnipeg Moves into First Place in Central Division

The NHL’s regular season ends on Saturday, and teams around the league are still jostling for playoff positioning. Last night, the Winnipeg Jets moved back into first place in the Central Division after beating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in overtime. They are now two points ahead of the St. Louis Blues with three games to play. Check out that and other top stories below.

Winnipeg allowed Chicago to score the game-tying goal with 2:20 to play, but Kevin Hayes put the game to bed shortly into overtime to give the Jets the win. Jack Roslovic scored twice for Winnipeg in regulation, while Chicago’s Dylan Strome had two goals and an assist in the loss.

The Edmonton Oilers will miss out on the playoffs for the 12th time in 13 seasons. They were officially eliminated from postseason contention on Monday night, and Connor McDavid is understandably frustrated with the direction of the franchise.

Although the Detroit Red Wings missed out on the postseason, GM Ken Holland is happy with the performance of coach Jeff Blashill. His contract has been extended for two years, and he will not have to worry about looking for a new job at the end of the season.

Toronto locked up a spot in the postseason with a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on Monday night. The Maple Leafs will face Boston in the first round of the playoffs, but home ice advantage has yet to be determined.

Yesterday was April Fools’ Day, and some NHLers decided to get in on the fun. The best prank was pulled by Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba, who covered rookie Eriksson Ek’s car with 6,700 Post-It notes.
