WWE Announces 2nd Mae Young Classic and More

WWE Announces 2nd Mae Young Classic

During the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony, WWE posted a trailer on Twitter highlighting future content for the WWE Network. This trailer included tons of new announcements from documentaries to original programming, to in-ring action. The biggest announcements were two new tournaments in the form of the 2nd Annual Mae Young Classic and a King of the Ring United Kingdom Tournament.

Here is a breakdown of everything announced in the WWE Network trailer.

Pay-Per-Views
These are not really new announcements, but WWE is highlighting the fact that Backlash, Extreme Rules, Money in the Bank, and SummerSlam are all in the near future. These should all be dual-branded events for the foreseeable future.

Ride Along and Table for 3
There are not any details on when, but WWE teases an episode of Ride Along starring the New Day. Also, there is going to be an episode of Table for 3 with Shane McMahon, Kurt Angle, and AJ Styles.

Original Programming
Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of the bunch is the return of Camp WWE. The animated series featuring WWE Superstars and voice-over from Vince McMahon will be returning for a third season. The Edge and Christian Show is also being renewed for another season, as well as WWE Storytime.

Documentaries
There are several documentaries in the works, mostly in the WWE24 realm of features. These documentaries focus in on single events or concentrated stories and there are a few on the way.

First is WWE24 The Hardys: Woken, which features the infamous shot of a drugged Jeff Hardy in the middle of a TNA ring. Next is WWE24: Raw25, focusing on this year’s episode of Raw that celebrated the show’s 25-year long history. Of course, the final WWE24 feature is solely focused on Ronda Rousey, who according to WWE, is perhaps their biggest signing ever.

There is also another installment of WWE365, which focuses on a single Superstar for an entire year. Following the debut installment featuring Kevin Owens, this version focuses on WWE Champion AJ Styles.

The Mae Young Classic and UK Division Return
Last year, WWE held the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament, which saw Tyler Bate as the winner and the first titleholder. After sporadic championship defenses, the United Kingdom Division returns with a King of the Ring Tournament specifically for them. It is unclear if the championship will be involved, but it shows promise for the future of those competitors.

Arguably the biggest announcement is the return of the Mae Young Classic. This single-elimination tournament showed off some of the best female wrestlers in the world (Toni Storm, Piper Niven/Viper, and Mia Yim) as well as new stars in NXT (Zeda, Bianca Belair, and Vanessa Borne). The finals saw Kairi Sane defeat current NXT Women’s Championship #1 Contender Shayna Baszler. The return of this tournament could help push women’s wrestling even further, in and out of WWE.
