After an epic rant that immediately went viral, Yankees manager Aaron Boone learned his punishment Friday: A one-game suspension. He served it that same night as New York beat the Colorado Rockies to continue rolling with the best record in baseball.
That’s probably well worth the boost Boone got in the media with fans and perhaps in his own clubhouse.

The rant, recapped
In case you live under a proverbial baseball rock, you’ve probably heard Boone’s rant. Upset with home-plate umpire Brennan Miller’s strike zone early in Thursday’s game, he unleashes a tirade that will live on YouTube for generations to come. Boone calls his players “f****** savages in the box.” He says Miller had a “piece of s*** start to this game.” He claps in Miller’s face. Then he bumps the bill of his cap against Miller (this is what the suspension was for, technically).
Aaron Boone said he expected the one-game suspension because he’d made contact with the ump with his hat during the rant. He said he got some “comments” from his children about his display and suggested fewer mics around the field.
“It was like I was mic’d up,” he said.

Moving forward
The Yankees already were playing great baseball. They lead the AL East by 9 games. Now will Boone’s comments and passion lift his team to an even higher level? That likely would mean the top seed in the American League and the best possible set-up for the playoffs.
Not bad for a group of savages.
Baseball is a game of constant adjustments, even for reporters. I have been preparing interview questions for Mariano Rivera and Mike Mussina for a few days. Now I’m trying to decide if I need to ask them how many lineups they faced that were “savages.” #aaronboone
