Is Zlatan Ibrahimovic Really Coming To America?

Ibrahimovic has voiced his displeasure with PSG.

When it comes to a superstar as big as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it should be no surprise when even the slightest rumbling of a potential transfer creates plenty of buzz. So when news broke that Ibrahimovic applied for an American visa, it really wasn’t a shock that it was trending around the world within minutes based on the potential that he could actually be on the move to an MLS club.

Ibrahimovic has admitted his interest in playing in the MLS but there are at least a handful of potential suitors both in North America and Europe that would absolutely love to bring him in to the fold and would be willing to do what it takes to get a deal done. Here is a look at the four most likely landing spots for polarizing superstar.

Paris Saint-Germain

Even when you consider that Ibrahimovic has spoken ill of PSG and been involved in plenty of rumors surrounding his potential exit, it really wouldn’t be a major shock if he stayed put with the club moving forward to next season. Regardless of what he has said, the bottom line is that Ibrahimovic is still considered among the best strikers in the world and one of the biggest superstars. He had 19 goals with PSG this season and the team chemistry on the pitch looks good, so it would be understandable if the club decided that what was best for them was to keep him in the lineup for at least one more year. Ibrahimovic has insisted it’s his intention to stay put in France, so despite all of the rumors it shouldn’t be a surprise if he does exactly that.

AC Milan

There has been plenty of talk about a potential move back to Italy and while Internazionale would be in the fold, there has been a lot of talk about AC Milan as one of the leading candidates to land his services. Silvio Berlusconi is desperate to bring Milan back to its former prominence and the addition of a superstar player like Ibrahimovic would be an excellent first step in that direction. AC Milan is expected to chase at least a couple of high profile signings this offseason and it shouldn’t be a major surprise if they are able to land Ibrahimovic as their prized addition.

LA Galaxy

When David Beckham left Real Madrid to sign with the LA Galaxy in 2007, it was the type of impact move that sent shockwaves throughout the league and really forced soccer fans to take notice. A number of players have made the move from Europe to the MLS since including both Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard to the Galaxy, but it would still be a huge shock if Ibrahimovic was to follow in their footsteps. There are some that believe Ibrahimovic isn‘t ready to leave Europe just yet but with the opportunity to build his brand and the MLS brand, and earn a ton of money and recognition in the process, there is a definite fit with the Galaxy should he decide to make the move to North America.

Chelsea

With Diego Costa already locked in as Chelsea’s No. 1 striker, it doesn’t seem likely that they will pursue Ibrahimovic but recent reports have Jose Mourinho toying with the idea of approaching him this offseason. The majority of experts believe Mourinho is looking for a better fit as the team’s second striker but it’s unlikely that Ibrahimovic would ever play for a club that expects him to come off the bench. That means if Mourinho wants him, he will have to temper with his formation in order to make sure both Costa and Ibrahimovic start up front. While that might sound crazy at first, it would actually make for one of the most lethal striker tandems in the entire world, so maybe it’s not as unlikely as it seems on the surface after all.
